Round Dog Hole Benches

19mm holes drilled through the 50mm parallel laminated western bluegum top suit Veritas bench fittings that assist in holding steady the workpiece - no matter what shape. Note the projecting metal peg on the vice.

This kit form bench has been designed for Veritas enthusiasts. The vices are a European plain screw regular front vice and a twin screw vice on the end. Both vices are surprisingly quick to use. The cone shaped piece on the right handle of the twin screw vice is a quick action device. Both handles travel together but one can be disengaged to allow for workpieces that are a little out of square. Holes are drilled opposite each vice with some being used in both vice locking up patterns. Twelve separate drilling and sanding actions are used to get the holes just so.
The top is a skin of tempered masonite which has been treated to resist spilt PVA glue.
There are holes drilled along the sides of the bench and vice cheek as well as on the bench top to take bench accessories. A bench pup protruding from the edge of the outer vice cheek can be used as a travelling clamp to hold pieces between it and another bench pup set into the bearer at the required distance. Bench pups, wonder pups and holdfasts are usually sold and delivered with the bench.

The standard jarrah top kit form bench adapted as a dog hole bench. Holes are placed to suit the individual's needs. Two vices are often mounted with each vice having two rows of holes opposite. This bench has a Record 52½ ED vice fitted on the end with provision for a possible later fitting of another vice on one side.

Extension tables can increase your working area without the need for a larger workbench.
The bench above (1800 x 900 x 935mm high) has two extension tables. The rear table was built to house a Leigh dovetailing jig. The front extension table is for multipurpose use. The small L shaped board between the two main tables is simply a table positioning jig.
The dovetailing extension table is held down with two Veritas hold downs. The table can be converted for other purposes such as holding a bench drill press, grinder or other tool normaly stored in a cupboard or hung on a wall out of the way.
The multipurpose extension table has a dog holing pattern that matches the dog holes in the bench top below it. There are also more dog holes outside the bench top area which are useful for squaring and gluing picture frames etc. If any PVA type glue spills it can be caught by paper spread over the floor below. The table has a surface of tempered masonite that has been coated to resist glue spills.
There are two fences which can be positioned in different rows of holes or at angles to suit sawing, sanding or attaching other traditional bench top devices that can be made in the home workshop.
The fence which is set at an oblique angle to the front of the bench shows just one feature of a Veritas bench pup in use with a Veritas wonder pup - a sash cramp.
If two wonder pups and two bench pups are used even an S shaped article can be locked up securely within the dog hole patterning of an extension table.
Multipurpose extension table kits can be purchased for clamping onto an existing workbench.

showing the very rare 'swampy jarrah' timber.]
The opposite end of the same bench without the extension tables shows a three-quarter length shelf which is set flush with the under side of the two long bearers. Any offcuts or tools can be easily stored for quick access while still holding onto a workpiece on the bench top.
As the shelf is set flush with the underside of the long bearers large F clamps can be clamped well in from the edge holding an article on the bench top.
The remaining quarter length of the bench edges allows clamping of a workpiece to the deep sides so that the worker can work directly above it.

This Record 52½ ED quick action vice has a raised metal peg (obscured) which is exerting pressure towards the bench pups clamping the workpiece tight on the bench top.
The workpiece, a block of raw jarrah, is also held firm against a bench stop which has been pushed up through the bench top and locked at the required height.
The workpiece is trapped on three sides allowing the entire top surface to be worked on without restriction.
Router Bench

Veritas router bench top and attachments fitted to a jarrah framework. Steel top, adjustable fence with micrometer, safety shields, stock hold downs, dust chute. Fits most routers without modification allowing the full depth of cut.
Top raises and is held up with a lock while bits are changed. Router can be on or off very quickly.
Rectangular Dog Hole

(Click on image to see an example of jarrah grain)
A blend of European and Australian styles. Work is clamped between three points - the projecting metal "peg" on the quick action vice and two bench "dogs" located in the dog holes. The full width end vice can be used to the outer edge with the assistance of speed clamps. The deep bearers add plenty of strength and clamping support as well as a place for the keen woodworker to drill peg holes at varying heights for supporting long heavy workpieces.
Western Bluegum Laminated Timber Top

Western bluegum is a new wonder tree being developed in Western Australia, it matures in seven years. This allows a much smaller acreage of forest to supply a set amount of timber over time. This image shows a large front vice, Czechoslovakian made, fitted to a 50mm cross laminated (5 layers) western bluegum top. A Veritas sliding tail vice is fitted back-right to the same western bluegum top and a Record holdfast is fitted back-left.
Close up photos of the vices and holdfast on this bench top can be seen in the Accessories section of this site.
